Week 5 - Mission Jacket Complete

This week, I realized that I needed to proceed with caution and not waste any more precious fabric. I was still committed to making the jacket, Burda 2/2011 108a, but I needed to make even more adjustments to the pattern that I sized up to fit me. The largest size for this pattern is 14 and I needed 18. I was able to get that larger adjustment correct but the jacket was too short. Since, I am also tall as well, I realized another adjustment to my pattern was needed. I added 1.5 inches, but to make sure the fit was right, I made a trial run with muslin to make sure I had the fit correct this time.

So after doing my homework well, I decided I was ready to start the real jacket with the fashion fabric. Success!!

muslinMuslin is a light cotton fabric, finely woven and typically white. It is often used to make a test garment before sewing with expensive fabric.

Week 3 - What a bust! Moving to Week 4

Well, Here in TX there was super snow storm. My family decided to hang around the house instead of braving the streets.

My sewing mojo was nonexistent. I tried to complete a quilt, I didn't get the result I wanted. So I tried to make this cute jacket it totally bombed.  I am really bummed. The jacket was too short and tight in the shoulders.  I am going to do the remake this week.

I know I was supposed to make the silk shirt but there was a snag, I didn't have enough fabric to make bias cut strips, I tried piecing them together on the polyester prototype. I didn't like the results. SO, I moved on to this jacket (Burda 2/2001 108 A).

But I am a large women for this patter so I up sized it the pattern with mixed results. I still like that jacket, I am going to make some adjustments to the pattern I made and sew it again on the cotton satin to match a skirt that I have. It will look really cute. We shall see how it goes!

The polyester prototype is complete came out pretty well; I will make some adjustment for the silk. I like the box pleats on the front of the top. I thought they, the box pleats, would add weight and make me look larger., but it is very figure flattering.

6 Week 1 Sewing Challenge - Burp Clothes for future parents of a baby girl! I made two types: One is flannel on both side; and they other type has flannel on one side and terry-cloth on the other.

This week's project was really a pleasure to make for a couple who have been trying to have children for years. They are super excited about their future with a child in it. I thought an special gift for a special blessing was necessary. I asked new mother was was a really good unique gift to give. She showed me a birth clothe that a person gave to her. Right up my alley unique and very useful.

I am not really eloquent with words or anything. But I am going to really try to update this blog once a week with a project a week. I want to sew an entire wardrobe for myself this year and make useful, touching, handmade gift to friends.

All that being said...... I am starting with a baby shower gift. Burping clothes. Will post photos later.
